State Agencies

NC Department of Health and Human Services

DHHS serves 7 million North Carolinians, protecting health, fostering self-reliance and protecting the vulnerable. The following divisions within DHHS serve those dealing with dementia and/or aging issues.

    • DHHS-Division of Social Services: The DSS provides training, technical assistance, and consultation to the local county staff who work in programs for families and children.
    • DHHS-Division of Facility Services: The Division of Facility Services has created a comprehensive listing of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice care agencies, home health agencies and mental health services throughout North Carolina.
    • DHHS-Division of Medical Assistance: This division provides eligible North Carolina residents with access to medically necessary health care services, including Medicaid.
    • DHHS-Division of Aging and Adult Services: This division promotes independence and enhances the dignity of North Carolina's older and disabled persons and their families.

    • Alzheimer's information: The Division of Aging and Adult Services works with a variety of resources to help families and professionals in their understanding of dementia and in preparing for caregiving.
    • Older Adults: DHHS advocates for citizens age 60 and older and their families. They also help younger generations prepare to enjoy their later years.
    • Office of Long Term Care Services and Support: This web site provides individuals, families, providers and other visitors with access to information about DHHS' work in support of long term care.
    • Family Caregiver Support Program: This program is dedicated to improving services for family caregivers.
    • County Listing of Senior Centers: Multi-purpose senior centers are a resource for the entire community, providing services and information on aging, and assisting family and friends who care for older persons.
    • Certified Adult Day Care and Adult Day Health Programs
    • Medicaid: A federal program administered by the NC Department of Health and Human Services Division of Medical Assistance. Medicaid benefits and eligibility vary according to a person's circumstances.

NC Department of Insurance Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP): This program helps families handle issues related to health insurance.

NC Department of Administration-Division of Veterans Affairs: The Division of Veterans Affairs assists veterans and their families in learning their eligibility for privileges, rights and benefits under Federal, State or local laws. NC Department of the Secretary of State--NC Advance Health Care Directive Registry This web site provides the information and forms needed to establish Advance Health Care Directives, which are legal documents in which you give written instructions about your health care, if in the future, you are unable to speak for yourself.
